Bicycle spokes are easily bent. When you sit on a bicycle, how come the wheels don't collapse?
Why don't bicycle wheels buckle?
Bicycle spokes may be easily bent if put under a bending load or will buckle if put under compression, but they don't stretch when put under tension. The rim is also fairly weak without the spokes and can be pushed or stretched out of round, but it still has some stiffness and its circumference won't easily change if it is distorted in this way.
When you sit on a bicycle, the hub tends to be pulled toward the ground. The spokes above the hub are under tension, transmitting the force to the top of the wheel rim. This would make the wheel rim collapse into an oval if it could do so without the sides of the rim to the front and rear of the bicycle sagging outward in the process. However, the spokes going to the forward and rear part of the wheel rim prevent the rim from going pear-shaped in this way.
The spokes are also not fastened to the center of the hub but to either side. This prevents the hub from deflecting sideways because half the spokes will be under greater tension if the hub tries to deflect in that way.
Finally, the rim cannot rotate with respect to the hub because the spokes don't run exactly radially from the hub to the outer rim. Instead, the hub flange is comparatively wide so that half the spokes are under tension if the rim tries to rotate forward with respect to the hub and the other half are under tension if it tries to rotate backward. Either way, the rim is not free to rotate.
Reply:When you sit on the bicycle, some spokes are under pressure. However the ones at the sides are under tension, and stop the wheel from buckling.

I had a scleral buckling surgery about 6 months ago. I see alittle improvement.?
how long does it take to fully heal? I just barely started working out again, is there a risk of damaging anything?
I had a scleral buckling surgery about 6 months ago. I see alittle improvement.?
OUCH! That suggests that you had a retinal detachment. By now, I would think that what will heal, has healed. Now as for "working out," I would not play ANY contact sport where there is a risk that your eye may be hit. At the very least, you must use an eye guard. But sometimes, it doesn't even take a direct hit to the eye, just a blow to the head that causes violent shaking to re-injure the eye. If you are lifting, remember to breath out while you are exerting yourself. Holding your breath will increase pressure throughout the body and again, may injur the eye. You might want to take some good multivitamins (like ocuvite). I'm not really sure if they will do anything, but who knows?

Why didn't I buckle down?
It's nearing the end of junior year, and my GPA is 3.58. If I had worked only SLIGHTLY harder my GPA could have been 3.63. Or maybe even higher? I feel like a complete idiot.
Will that GPA severely affect my chances of getting into NYU? Please be honest =]
Why didn't I buckle down?
How would we know?
Reply:If there's one thing I've learned in life it's that nothing is impossible. Even if your GPA isn't high enough you can still get in eventually. After you graduate high school things become less about grades/GPA and more about experience and willingness/ability to contribute to the college community. My grades were crap in high school. I almost flunked out yet I got accepted to an ivy league school. I declined the offer because if there are two things I've learned in life the second one would be that ivy league schools are overpriced and overrated!
Reply:Only you can answer that question. Sounds like you've learned something from your experience.
NYU is very competitive, so the higher your grades, the better your chances of being admitted. But be sure you apply to a range of schools: "safety", "pretty sure thing" and "reach".

What do they call the belt buckle style that is on military belts?
I used to have a Billabong belt that had the military style belt buckle (where you just pull the belt through and push down; no holes). I loved this belt, but I can't find any more like it now that I have lost it. I want to find one on ebay or online somewhere but I'm not sure what to call the style. Please help, my pants are falling down!

It's called a scout belt from what I remember. I used to have tons of them.

Abaqus-tell abaqus not to allow buckling?
hi, i am modelling a simple 3D I-beam section, with pressure applied on top flange. how to tell abaqus that if i do not allow the beam to buckle? please advice.
Abaqus-tell abaqus not to allow buckling?
Hi there,
Actually u can do this by constraining the model (in ur case beam) along the direction i.e for example if u have x-y co-ordinate system where x axis is the width of the beam and y axis is the length. Then apply constraint along Ux=0; This will make the translation along x to be zero. In this way the beam would not buckle.

Buckle up, Its the law?
If we get a fine for not having our seat belts on then why is it that Millions of children go to school each day on a bus without a seatbelt. Shouldnt they put seat belts on school busses so our children are safe going to school? Or is it just a way for the government to get more money from people?
Buckle up, Its the law?
Your very right....It's actually kinda of funny not funny in a ha ha way but in your face kind of fun ...well more like a itch slap because a lot of things are said and not done and a lot of rules apply to you one day and not the next. Believe me I just had an accident and the cop that went to make the report was dumber than my dog...let me tell you my dog is pretty smart compared to him....I know more about the law lol...I mean you go to school and you learn about how everything is suppose to work whats right and wrong and then you get out in the real world and people are just contradicting each other and being hyprocrites.....As much as America is a better place than most...it is also very bad off when it comes to some things...this being one of them...Appparently they say that seat belts in school buses are even more dangerous than buses without seat belts ...go figure! It's just crazy!
Reply:You're right... and it's true for public transport buses, too. It seems so strange that people would endanger our lives on either of these.
Reply:Go figure.
Reply:Reminds me of the other question I saw earlier:
Dont drink and drive unless your on a H-D
Reply:the federal "click it or ticket" campaign is a way to bypass a lot of the states laws on illegal search and seizure. an officer can now pull you over based on that alone. as well as set up "seat belt checkpoints" to enforce the law. a lot of state constitutions do not allow for these checkpoints because of the lack of "probable cause". that's my opinion.
Reply:yea damn kids!!!!!
Reply:Very good question!
Reply:Basically, seatbelt laws are primarily the result of heavy lobbying by insurance companies, that have to pay out less money if people always wear seatbelts. Second, and a major reason the government enforces the laws, is it is a very easy hundred bucks or so a pop if the catch you without your seatbelt. School busses don't have them because due to the huge difference in body size and body type of various children, it is actually safer for them to NOT be belted than for them to be wearing a belt that does not fit, and it is impossible to have correctly sized belts for every child who rides every bus.
Reply:School bus entirely different. It is having limited speed.
But your car can go with varying speeds

Smoking Holland They finally buckled?
Smoking in pubs, bars and restaurants as from 1 July 2008
Since 2004, employers in Holland have been bound to ensure that their employees are not bothered by smoking. The hospitality industry was exempt from this obligation, however, the Dutch cabinet has decided that all pubs, restaurants, etc. must be non-smoking, effective 1 July 2008. Staff in these establishments will enjoy the same protection as employees in other industries. This means that from 1 July 2008 it is no longer allowed to smoke in hotels, cafés and restaurants, fast food restaurants and discotheques. Smoking will no longer be allowed either in coffee shops, the cafés in Holland in which selling and using soft drugs is permitted, under certain conditions.
Individual establishments may set up closed smoking areas, staff will not be allowed to serve in these areas.

Smoking Holland They finally buckled?

Reply:I don't see a problem, many coffee shops already have several floors. They will just have to make some new partitions.
I would like to see the same rule for pubs in the UK. Pubs should be allowed to have rooms where non-smoking staff can refuse to work, but customers are allowed to smoke.
I don't see anything wrong with the Dutch drug laws either, but I don't think any of the current major political parties would adopt them.
Reply:this is the final straw Europe has finally gone over the edge there have been various wars within and between various nations within Europe which have caused a variety of damage and disaster but they will be nothing in comparison to the smoking ban (read social engineering) when adopted by the coffee shops of Holland.

Does anyone else sometimes buckle under the pressure to be "interesting" at parties ?
I got into a bit of trouble trying to be more interesting and confident and I'm still paying for it now! Your friends are your friends for a reason - they like you and want to be around you - so you should feel happy that at least a few people at the party know you're interesting!!
Just be yourself (I know, they all say it) and go with the flow. People who try too hard tend to stand out a mile at parties coz they're usually pissed as a fart and annoying the hell out of everyone by trying to be interesting!
Does anyone else sometimes buckle under the pressure to be "interesting" at parties ?
if it doesn't come naturally, forget about it....
it's better that way!
Reply:sure. sometimes it's difficult. it's even harder to fake interest in someone who just has nothing to say. I hate it when people think I'm weird 'cause I don't want to make smalltalk but can talk politics with complete strangers for hours. god I hat smalltalk! if no one wants to have an actual conversation I just talk with my friends otherwise I just leave 'cause then the party is no fun anyway
Reply:LOL, I'm so old all the parties I go to are thrown by friends or me and we all know each other!!! We just talk about work, life, news, you know like how Brittney is dating that ugly guy......
Reply:NO... usually I have to hide in a corner to keep someone from pointing me out and yelling... "HEY... HE PLAYS GUITAR (AND PIANO) and the next thing, I am roped into playing a mini concert that I haven't prepared for and didn't plan to play.
At that point, I suddenly remember that I had left a load of cats in the dryer at home, excuse myself and LEAVE.
Reply:The most "interesting" people are the ones who show an interest in other people. If you ask people questions about their lives, they'll think you're great.
Reply:I used to but so often it wouldn't work. Once I realized that I just decided to enjoy it. Sometimes things get on a roll and then people do find me interesting, but when that happens or not, I try to enjoy interesting people, and let it work out, you see. It's much more fun.
Reply:Yes, quite often.

Come on people!! i accidently had shoe polish on my belt buckle and the drill instructor brought me...........
in the whiskey locker, put only three of his fingers on my wind pipe, i couldnt breath for about 30 seconds, and then he punched me in the stomach hard, just over a lousy belt buckle!!!! i know most of u in the military category will say the drill instructor done the right thing but hitting recruits is against the law! my question is, why you all condone this type of behavior? i am not a punching bag!!

Does the Eye Doctor lways give you DILATING drops after SCLERAL BUCKLE surgery ?
My surgeon gave me antibiotic and prednisone drops after top and bottom scleral buckle surgery two days ago.
I notice that most of the articles online say the dilating drops are also always given.
Should I have them also? My eye is hurting pretty bad, very red, sore, and 'burns' and is very 'hot'. I also have a 101.4 fever. The fever developed 8 hrs. after the surgery; the severe redness and burning/watering the following evening.
My eye doctor could not be reached (no answering service picked up) when the question came to mind tonight, and I had no one to ask. I am applying cold packs to help with the redness and swelling.
Does the Eye Doctor lways give you DILATING drops after SCLERAL BUCKLE surgery ?
Drops for dilation are typically given in office in order for the physician to be able to see your retina. The are not an absolute must after retinal surgery and some physicians do not prescribe them. It is not uncommon to keep a patient dilated in order to prevent added strain and further detachment on the retina which may be caused by the natural focusing of you eye when you use it. Is your eye patched? If so then I do not believe dilation drops would have much of an added benefit.
More of a concern is your fever and pain and redness. You should review your post-surgery instructions and if they indicate that you should watch for fever then a trip to the ER or urgent care clinic may be in order. A post-surgical infection is NOT a matter that should be taken lightly.
Reply:Pretty much, yes. It makes complete visualization of the retina much more achievable, which is very important in this context.

Is it mandatory to buckle safe belt at rear seat in California?
It's state law in California that ANY passenger in a motor vehicle has to wear a safety belt while in a moving car.
I think there are some technicalities such as with classic cars or buses, but that's the exception, not the rule.
Is it mandatory to buckle safe belt at rear seat in California?
If the car has seatbelts, they need to be used. That's the law in any state. And the fine is hefty if you don't comply.
The exception to that would be a pre-seatbelt classic car; the ones I know of are not required to have seatbelts because they weren't original manufacturers' equipment. But they're the *exception*, not the rule.
Reply:yes it is the law states that every one has to be properly restrained. if the person who is not using the seat belt is under 16 then the driver will get the ticket. if there is a child that should be in a car seat and is not the parents or driver can face child endangerment charges also

A scleral buckle is one of several ophthalmologic procedures that can be used to repair a retinal detachment. Retinal detachments are usually caused by retinal tears, and a scleral buckle can be used to close the retinal break.
Scleral buckles come in many shapes and sizes. An encircling band is a thin silicone band sewn around the circumference of the sclera of the eye. Buckles are often placed under a band to create a dimple on the eye wall.
The scleral buckle is secured around the eyeball under the conjunctiva. This moves the wall of the eye closer to the detached retina. It also may move the retina closer to the vitreous. This alteration in the relationships of the tissues seems to allow the fluid which has formed under the retina to be pumped out, and the retina to re-attach. No-one really understands the physics or physiology of this process.
Retinal detachment surgery usually also involves the use of cryotherapy or laser photocoagulation. The laser or cryotherapy forms a permanent adhesion around the retinal break and prevent further accumulation of fluid and re-detachment.
Scleral buckles are done using local or general anesthesia and are often done as outpatient procedures. In some cases, the buckles can be removed after the retina heals.

What your favorite belt buckle to wear?
One that was made by another welder many moons ago. Horseshoe shape, hard to describe, looks like braid, stainless steel. Many times it's been complimented and I've been asked where I got it. I traded a Ship's lighter for it back in the '80s, during a Yard (overhaul) period for my ship.

Buckle up or eat glass!?
i dont kno about where u live, but i live in illinois and in my city, you have to wear a seatbelt while your driving or u get a ticket.
did they make that a new law where u live?

Do you make your kids buckle up before you even start your vehicle up?
Ok i just asked a question in regards to the death of my 11 year old cousin. There was one person that said "She was old enough, she should have put it on" (Yea she should have put her seatbelt on but any mother should enforce their kids to wear seatbelts even if they do not want to wear them)
As a mother i make sure a seatbelt in around my son. He sometimes don't want to wear one but he has too and i will not drive without him being buckled up.
What do you all think about that person implying like it was my cousins fault?
Do you make your kids buckle up before you even start your vehicle up?
i ALWAYS make sure my children are buckled in and i won't allow my husband to even start the car until they are. I don't care if we have to sit there for 3hrs we won't leave our driveway until ALL seatbelts are on including mine and my husbands. We have to be good role models for our children, if they are to learn good lessons in life. Seatbelts do save lives and could have saved the life of your cousin(sorry to bring that up) had the step-mom been more responsible.
My youngest son who is still in a car seat he reminded us the other day "don't leave yet daddy, i not buckled in" and we turned the car off and buckled him in.
We are concerned so much about the crazy drivers where we live that we even installed special mirrors in our van so we could keep an eye on the kids.
I think anyone who fails to ensure their children are safely buckled in should be arrested and charged, i know it sounds harsh but is a fine really enough to make people use seatbelts? Not in my opinion and harsher punishments for offenses like this would be greatly beneficial to everyone and it ensures the safety of every passenger in the vehicle.
Reply:My sincere sympathy on the loss of your cousin,Amber. It was so preventable. We can never assume that children will buckle up.As adults it is up to us to ensure they are safe. Report It
Reply:I remember your question adn Im sorry about your cousin. She SHOULD have put it on herself, but if it is not enforced most will not. To answer THIS question, absolutely! My car does not even start until everyone is buckled. If it;s 20 degrees outside, I guess they need to buckle a bit quicker if they want to get warm!!
Reply:Yes - I hope all parents insist on that.
Reply:2 of my 3 children are still in carseats so I have to get them in 1st before I start the car. Our 9 year old does her own seatbelt, and I do not pull out of the driveway until I have verified that all 3 are properly secured! Not wearing a seatbelt is not a choice in our vehicles. You either wear it or we don't go! That goes for adults as well as children. I do not want to be responsible for someone being injured or killed because they weren't wearing a seatbelt.
Reply:It's the law and if your cousin's mother failed to make sure your cousin was buckled up or not - should be at fault. The mother needs to turn herself in for aiding to the death of her child.
Reply:Yes, I make sure my kids are buckled up. Maybe not necessarily before starting up the vehicle, but before moving the vehicle.
The law here states that the driver is responsible for making sure that anybody under the age of 16 is wearing a seatbelt. (Everybody is required by law to wear a seatbelt here.) This makes sense to me, even if it isn't law where you live. I don't see how an 11yo should be held responsible for something like that. 11yo's are kids without a full understanding of what could happen.
Reply:It is sad what has happened to your cousin, but it is illegal not to wear seat belt and all children up to 11 years old or under 4 foot tall must use a child seat and seat belt.
I think the person who told your cousin that, whilst right, could have been more tactful.
Remember CLUNK CLICK EVERY TRIP!
Reply:My son's are like the answerer before me (erinjl12) They
always put there seatbelt on with no reminder and even
check to make sure I have mine on as well with the exception
of my three year old who needs help getting buckled.
My oldest son is nine and when he was six months old a carseat saved his life when we had a car accident in
an icy storm. My nine and six year old know how important

Not only is it the law, a person or for that matter a pet not wearing a seat belt or in a car seat can actually turn into a projectile in an accident and can cause serious injury or death to others in the car.

I think that is very rude of the person.
Reply:When my kids were little I wouldn't turn on the radio till they were buckled up.
We usually had their favorite cd in there "The Little Mermaid" or "Lion King".
If they wouldn't buckle up I would make a slight hit on the brake while still in the driveway and then they would find out why they had to buckle up.
When I would take all the Brownie girls somewhere they had to all buckle up before I would turn on the cd and then all 6 of them would be singing.

Unfortunately the person who implied it was your cousins fault was rude. It was a choice that she and her daughter made and I am sorry that that choice cost a life. My prayers are with her, an I am sorry she will have to live with that for the rest of her life. I pray God will grant her peace and she will forgive herself if she holds herself responsible.

Reply:It's a good rule. You could get hit backing out of the driveway.
Also, it just sets the standard.
The problem is if you're going somewhere they don't want to go. They could refuse to put it on and then what?
So, you may want to always have a positive consequence when you're out - whether that's a sticker for a little one or just saying thank you to an older child.
Reply:My kids buckle before I put my car into gear. They even remind me to put my seat belt on. Trust me they look.
I always check their seat belts. Its the law. They need me to be their grown-up and keep them safe.
Reply:i think every kid should be buckled untill they turn 18. i dont think they should have a choice in the matter it is the law. when its the law you dont have a choice you buckle up no matter what.
Reply:I'm sorry about your cousin, and in such a tragic situation, I won't place blame - especially since it would add insult to injury, so to speak.
That said, yes, I ALWAYS make sure my son is wearing a seatbelt! He's only 3, so I make it fun by doing the rocket thing from Little Einsteins. He buckles his seatbelt (in his booster seat), and after I check it and buckle mine, we say the line from the show, "Seat belts buckled!" Then we do the "pat, pat pat" and "Raise your arms as high as you can and say, 'Blastoff!'" before I even start the car. He loves pretending the car won't start until he puts on his seatbelt. But he's 3, not 11; he still needs to be reminded to wear his belt.
So, in answer to your question, blame shouldn't be placed anywhere. Yes, the adult driving should have made every child put on a seatbelt, but no, an 11 - year - old should NOT have to be reminded or told to put on a seatbelt. Again, this sounds like a really sad situation and I don't think the aim should be to place blame on anyone.
I'll keep your cousin and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
Reply:I'm a mother to be, but I will make her put her seatbelt on before moving the car when she's old enough to do it herself.
Reply:Well, 1st off it's illegal for kids not to wear their seat belts. Secondly, When my kids were younger we made sure they knew how important seatbelts are, and yes, they DID have to buckle up before we went anywhere (occasionally i would start the car quickly before they were buckled because it would be so cold). In fact when they were little they used to remind grandma to put her seatbelt on!
I think it is the parents responsibility to make sure the kid is buckled up regardless of if he's 11 or 2...heaven forbid something should happen (like an accident), but at the very least you would probably get a ticket
Oh, and I am sorry to hear about your cousin's death. May he rest in peace
Reply:I always ensure they're buckled up and even in the middle of driving, I'll double check b/c they're at the age they slide the shoulder belt down or unlock it. You can never be too safe.
Reply:Ya I wouldn't put the car in gear until everyone is buckled up. I make everyone..no matter kid/adult put on their seatbelt if they ride with me. I'm not taking any chances and if something happens to them I do not want the blame. Some say when the child turns 18 then it's fine but that's their choice. But yes kids under 18 def. need to put their seatbelt on.

I have this beautiful Harley Davidson Chained Linked Belt With a Eagle on the Buckle and trying to get a price
The Belt Buckle almost looks like Black Hills Gold buts its just the beautyful colors in it, the belt its self is 5/8 inches thick and weighs with the buckle about 10 lbs. All in new condition

5 Grand, maybe.
Reply:I have one of those as well. Cost me about $60, which may seem pricey for a belt buckle, but it has the Harley logo on it so it was worth it. Like all things Harley these days, however, its made in China.

My nine and six year old know how important
it is to be in a carseat, or to wear your seatbelt.
I do not think it is your cousin's fault - the mother should
have made sure she was wearing her seatbelt especially if
she knew she did not like wearing the seatbelt.
Reply:It is the law.
Reply:Under the age of 16 (When it is legal for them to drive) a driver can be ticketed for not making sure that a child is buckled up, so yes, it is the parent's repsonsibility. My son is still in his car seat, so I always make sure he is buckled in first, but when my niece is with me (She's 10 1/2) I make sure she has her seatbelt on before I start the car.
Reply:i dont have kids yet but i make any children thats in the car with me buckle up before i start the car
Reply:no but before I drive away
Reply:I don't have kids but it's the first thing I do when I get into my car.
Reply:Yes I make sure my kids are always buckled up, and more than that EVERYONE who rides in my car has to wear a seat belt before my car will move, I don't care who it is or how short the drive is. Not only is it the law, a person or for that matter a pet not wearing a seat belt or in a car seat can actually turn into a projectile in an accident and can cause serious injury or death to others in the car.
Reply:It is the law but nobody should blame the mother the daughter should have put it on she knew that didn't she? Sorry about the loss of your cousin. My heart goes out to you and your family.
Reply:My mom and dad always do that. They say, "Is everyone buckled up?" And they wait.
It was not your cousin's fault. That was really insensitive. Even if it was party her fault, but was she driving the car?
I think that is very rude of the person.
Reply:When my kids were little I wouldn't turn on the radio till they were buckled up.
We usually had their favorite cd in there "The Little Mermaid" or "Lion King".
If they wouldn't buckle up I would make a slight hit on the brake while still in the driveway and then they would find out why they had to buckle up.
When I would take all the Brownie girls somewhere they had to all buckle up before I would turn on the cd and then all 6 of them would be singing.
Reply:it's never the child's fault that's why they have parents so they can keep them safe so i do not believe it is your cousins fault
Reply:Absolutely everyone should buckle up old and young alike no matter what the age, the car does not start until all seat belts are fastened.
Reply:I dont have kids but when I look after my nephews and niece I always make sure they have their belts on. My car has a little belt checker and the lights go off when the belts are buckled in, if a light is still on theres no way I will move that car until the light goes off. And when im driving and the light comes up i pull over and start kickin some a'ss and make them buckle back up :)
Reply:yes

Is it legal to double buckle on a tractor?

I need to replace a buckle for a purse by Via Repubblica, where is their offical website?
You could try this company. They sell Via Republica. Maybe they can help you. Worse case scenario: maybe you could order your same purse and return the broken one as the new one and get a refund.

I have this beautiful Harley Davidson Chained Linked Belt With a Eagle on the Buckle and trying to get a price
5 Grand, maybe.
Reply:I have one of those as well. Cost me about $60, which may seem pricey for a belt buckle, but it has the Harley logo on it so it was worth it. Like all things Harley these days, however, its made in China.

How can I fix my buckled front wheel on my mountain bike?
Been out today and gone over on my bike, its buckled the front wheel and i think bent my handlebars a bit, i live in the uk so am wondering what would be the average price so i dont get ripped off and also if there are any ways i could fix them myself. Thankyou for any help.
How can I fix my buckled front wheel on my mountain bike?
Hi Daniel,
doing the repairing yourself depends on how 'mechanically' experienced you are. Truing a wheel is quite easy once you've gotten the hang of it. It takes a truing stand, a spoke-wrench and knowledge (basically, if you can think straight have a try). If the wheel is (literally) bent you might need a new rim and have the wheel relaced. If you don't care and it's a busbike/beerbike use a hammer and go for it! Having work done by a bikeshop will set you back 10-15 quid for trueing or whatever wheel you need will determine the price (range from 25 and up). Cheers!
for more info go to http://sheldonbrown.com/wheelbuild.html and scroll down to 3/4 of the page to: Tensioning and truing
Reply:Man, I don't think you can fix it properly if it's bent up pretty bad. You just don't want the hassle either of having to true the spokes if you're not into that.
A good rim should cost anywhere from $25-$50 - dang sorry, that's American dollars - typically I am ignorant of the conversion.
Hey if you're riding the MTB on the street, now's a good time to consider some lighter, stronger- perhaps narrower rims, maybe?
